“The God who made the world … is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.”

Acts 17:24-25
You need your daily bread. But God doesn’t need food for energy, or a coat for protection against winter cold, or a roof over His head. God doesn’t need anything. We, on the other hand, are in constant need. That’s why we pray for “daily” bread. Like water and oxygen, bread is not a one-and-done kind of thing. We continuously need God’s provision. Do you realize how utterly dependent you are on God for all good things?

Not only are you dependent on God, but also you are dependent on others. In the prison system, you rely on wardens, corrections officers, family members, and a whole host of other people to meet your needs. None of us exists alone; we are shoulder to shoulder with others.

God very often answers our prayers for our needs by connecting us with people who have an abundance. They, in turn, serve us by helping us with our basic provision. It’s as Paul described in 2 Corinthians: “At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need” (8:14).
