“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”

Luke 9:23-24
I recall my very first multi-day fishing trip. It was radically different from any type of fishing I had done before, so I had very little idea of what to do or expect. While we were leaving port, an old Japanese gentleman on board perceived that I was clueless. He introduced himself and began to help me. Over the next several days, he made it a point to check in on me often, giving advice and putting me at ease. He instructed me about what I could do to have the best chance at catching fish. That old fisherman took me under his wing. I still use some of his techniques to this day.

Discipleship begins with the call to give up our old life and follow Jesus. But it doesn’t end there. As the apostle John reminds us, if we are to live the life of a disciple, we will love those who also heed the call, showing them the way as well. We urge them to “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life” (Proverbs 4:13).

What a great privilege to share with others what we have learned about following Christ.
