"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? ...But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
(1 CORINTHIANS 15:55, 57)

1 Corinthians 15:51-57
We hear almost daily of friends or acquaintances struck down without warning. We’ve grown indifferent about the evening news reports of violent deaths. We may callously discuss the death of some famous or prominent person. Yet we find it difficult to contemplate our
own deaths.

Death just seems so final, so unknown. We know that it catches up with everyone eventually. But we don’t know what to expect from it. For many, the subject causes depression and melancholy.

For the believer in Jesus, however, death is not a subject to make us pull the covers over our heads. In fact, death is spoken of in the Bible as an event to be looked forward to! “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain,” Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians.

Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we, along with Paul, understand dying to be “gain”. The Bible tells of the joy and rest that await us in heaven. We need not fear. Christ truly has taken the sting out of death and replaced it with victory.
