“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Proverbs 14:30
In many ways, our consumer-driven culture of the 21st century is exhausting. When you’ve finally acquired the latest gadget, another lighter, faster, sleeker one comes along to replace it. The latest clothes? Already out of style. New music? So last season. The relentless pace of development and change can make us feel like we are constantly chasing the wind.

And then envy begins to churn inside of us, drawing us away from what Solomon calls a tranquil heart. Interestingly, in this proverb, there appear to be even physical manifestations of both a contented heart and an envious one. Perhaps Solomon had observed how a spirit of ingratitude and jealousy works its way deep into a person’s being, resulting in a bitterness that is physically evident.

The solution? Find peace through God in Christ. He freely offers it to you! Think about and be grateful for all He has given you. Not only will you be glad for the gift of salvation, but also your heart will be tranquil as it rests in the life God has graciously allotted to you.
