“Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Luke 2:38
For those who love the story of Simeon, it’s hard to not also love the very brief story of Anna. She had spent most of her life as a widow—and as a worshiper of God. When her husband died just seven years into their marriage, she drew near to the Lord, remaining in the temple well into her 90s. The Lord has a special love for those bereaved of earthly love, like the orphan and the widow. He becomes for them a father and a husband. Anna had spent her life enjoying the love of the divine Bridegroom.

But the day Mary and Joseph arrived at the temple with their baby was like no other. How extraordinary to have been bereft of earthly love for a lifetime, only to then behold the fullness of God in the face of the Christ child. Of course she would speak of Him to all who were waiting for the love of God to be revealed! Exiles know the pain of severed love.

As Christians, we need not be perpetually hopeless, lonely, or grieving. The love of God has been made manifest for us in Christ Jesus. He alone consoles the love-sick heart.
